How to Prepare for Your Summer Camp Counsellor Interview
While the idea of a job interview overseas may seem stressful at first, AmeriCamp is here to support you through your entire camp counsellor process, interviews included. Once your application has been completed and distributed to different summer camps, you’ll most likely be contacted by a camp director for an interview.
Here are some things you can do to prepare for your interview, and your amazing upcoming summer!
Dressing Professionally For Your Interview
Whether it’s an in-person or virtual interview, dressing professionally for a job interview is key. It’s an important part of making a good impression with your potential camp director and anyone else sitting in on your interview. It can also help you feel comfortable and confident.
When choosing an appropriate outfit for a job interview, consider clothes that are business casual, such as:
- A nice blouse or button down shirt
- Slacks or dress pants
- A blazer
- Closed toe shoes
If possible, avoid clothes that have:
- Tears
- Stains
- Wrinkles
- Noticeable defects
Basic Job Interview Preparation
Before thinking about specific questions you’ll be asked at your camp counsellor interview, here are a few things to consider:
- Arrive on time to your interview: Be sure to make extra time for your in-person or virtual interview. Being punctual is very important, especially as a camp counsellor.
- Understand and be proud of your skills: Are you great at a specific sport? Did you ever babysit for friends or family before? These are useful skills to keep in mind during your interview.
- Research your camp: take a look at their website, check out the activities they might offer, and take note of what sort of camp they are.
- Think about common questions, and how you want to respond: Think about your strengths, weaknesses, any prior experience you might have, and how you’d like to respond to those sorts of questions. You can even practice with a friend!
Your AmeriCamp team may also offer special job interview assistance, depending on your local AmeriCamp partner representative.
Preparing Your Resume For Your Camp Counsellor Interview
Your resume is an important part of any job interview, but using the same resume for every position you apply to isn’t optimal. Your resume should reflect your strengths and experiences related to the job you’re seeking, and it should be in a format that’s easy to read.
Tailoring your resume for your Camp Counsellor interview
While you don’t need experience to work as an AmeriCamp counsellor, your resume can still reflect related skills for your interview. It’s a good idea to list other associated skills on your resume such as babysitting, tutoring, computer skills and any experience you may have with recreational programs on your resume.
Camp counsellors may also look for applicants that have:
- Strong people skills
- Great communication skills
- First aid training
- CPR certification
Be sure to list any related career or work study experience on your resume, and any examples of other similar experiences you think would help you stand out as a camp counsellor candidate.
Resume Formatting
Your resume can give your interviewer a snapshot of your career, so it’s important to make sure it’s easy to find important information that relates to your interview. Be sure to include:
- Your name and contact info
- Your professional history
- Your education
- Any extra curricular activities
- A section to list your skills
To help make your resume easy to read, you should also:
- choose a basic font like Times New Roman
- Use a font size between size 10 to 12
- Use bullet points when you list several pieces of information under sections like education and your professional history
- Proofread your resume
Feel free to include a summary and objective, but try to keep your descriptions short and simple, as your resume should be around a page long.
Mock Camp Counsellor Interview Questions
In your interview, you’ll likely be asked a variety of questions that relate to camp counselling, but also to any previous work experience you have, your education, and about your personality. While that may seem like a lot to think about, your AmeriCamp team is here to support you through your entire application process.

You’ll learn important things about the camp you may be placed with, and also show that you’re interested in your camp.
What To Do if You Don’t Know How to Answer a Question at Your Interview
No matter how much you prepare, there’s a possibility that you may be asked a question you’re not sure how to answer. While you may feel a little anxious about that chance, here are a few things you can do instead of sitting there silently:

Each AmeriCamp summer camp offers their own unique programs and activities! Camps with access to a pool or body of water may offer activities that include watersports, while other camps based in cities might offer special activities like the performing arts, or robotics.

- Lead and participate in camp activities with their campers
- Help prepare activities
- Help with equipment set up or tear down

Specialist camp counsellors with specific skill sets might be put in charge of a specific activity for the entire camp, and sometimes counsellors can be responsible for a group of campers for the entire program duration.
Camp counsellors are also expected to be patient, understanding, and able to think on their feet. Conflict resolution is another key skill; along with good teamwork and flexibility.

FAQs
What questions are asked in a camp counsellor interview?
Camp counsellor interviews typically cover four areas: your background and experience with children, personality and passions, situational scenarios (such as handling a camper who won't follow instructions), and questions about teamwork and leadership. You may also be asked about your strengths and weaknesses, past camp experience as a camper or staff member, and how you would resolve conflicts between campers. Preparing clear, honest answers to each type gives you the best chance of landing your placement.
How should I prepare for a summer camp counsellor interview?
Prepare by researching the camp, practising your answers to common scenario and behavioural questions, and arriving on time and dressed in business casual attire. Review your own skills honestly - interviewers want to see self-awareness as much as experience. If you apply through AmeriCamp, your placement team guides you through the whole process so you know what to expect before you even sit down for the interview.
What experience do I need to pass a camp counsellor interview?
You do not need formal camp experience to succeed. Interviewers value any background working with or supervising children - babysitting, tutoring, sports coaching, and first aid or CPR certifications all count. Highlighting transferable skills like communication, patience, and teamwork is often just as persuasive as a long CV. AmeriCamp accepts applicants aged 18 and over who can demonstrate genuine enthusiasm for working with young people.
What situational questions come up in camp counsellor interviews?
Expect scenario-based questions such as: how would you handle a camper who refuses to join an activity, what would you do if conflict broke out in your group, or how would you keep campers entertained on a rainy day? Interviewers want to see calm thinking and child-centred instincts. Practise structured answers that describe the situation, the action you took, and the outcome.
What should I wear and how should I act in a camp counsellor interview?
Dress in clean, smart-casual clothes - think blouses, slacks, or a blazer and closed-toe shoes. Avoid anything torn, stained, or overly casual. Beyond appearance, arrive on time, make eye contact, and be honest if you are unsure of an answer; pausing to think is far better than bluffing. Camps want to see warmth and reliability, so let your personality come through.
What questions should I ask the camp at the end of my interview?
Asking thoughtful questions shows genuine interest and helps you find the right fit. Good ones to ask include: what activities will I lead, what are the living arrangements, how is safety managed on site, and what does a typical day look like for a counsellor? Camps across the US differ widely in size and specialism, so use this moment to make sure the role suits you as much as you suit the camp.
How does AmeriCamp help me get ready for the camp interview?
When you apply with AmeriCamp, your placement support does not stop at paperwork. The team matches you to one of over 900 camps across the US, helps prepare you for the interview stage, and handles your J-1 visa sponsorship. The programme fee is GBP 399, and once placed you earn $2,250 or more over the summer with free accommodation, meals, and insurance included.
Can I still apply if I have never been to a summer camp before?
Absolutely - no previous camp experience is required. Many successful counsellors are first-timers who bring fresh energy and enthusiasm. In your interview, focus on relevant skills like looking after younger siblings, leading school sports, or any voluntary work with children. What matters most is your attitude and your ability to keep children safe and engaged throughout the summer.
