Here are some things you can do to prepare for your interview, and your amazing upcoming summer!

Dressing Professionally For Your Interview

Whether it’s an in-person or virtual interview, dressing professionally for a job interview is key. It’s an important part of making a good impression with your potential camp director and anyone else sitting in on your interview. It can also help you feel comfortable and confident.

When choosing an appropriate outfit for a job interview, consider clothes that are business casual, such as:

A nice blouse or button down shirt
Slacks or dress pants
A blazer
Closed toe shoes

If possible, avoid clothes that have:

Tears
Stains
Wrinkles
Noticeable defects

Basic Job Interview Preparation

Before thinking about specific questions you’ll be asked at your camp counsellor interview, here are a few things to consider:

Arrive on time to your interview: Be sure to make extra time for your in-person or virtual interview. Being punctual is very important, especially as a camp counsellor.

Your resume is an important part of any job interview, but using the same resume for every position you apply to isn’t optimal. Your resume should reflect your strengths and experiences related to the job you’re seeking, and it should be in a format that’s easy to read.

Tailoring your resume for your Camp Counsellor interview

While you don’t need experience to work as an AmeriCamp counsellor, your resume can still reflect related skills for your interview. It’s a good idea to list other associated skills on your resume such as babysitting, tutoring, computer skills and any experience you may have with recreational programs on your resume.

Camp counsellors may also look for applicants that have:

Strong people skills
Great communication skills
First aid training
CPR certification

Be sure to list any related career or work study experience on your resume, and any examples of other similar experiences you think would help you stand out as a camp counsellor candidate.

Resume Formatting

Your resume can give your interviewer a snapshot of your career, so it’s important to make sure it’s easy to find important information that relates to your interview. Be sure to include:

Your professional history
Your education
Any extra curricular activities

About Summer Camp Counselling With AmeriCamp

Camp Counsellor Expectations

Although responsibilities will vary for different camps, summer camp counsellors are generally expected to:

Lead and participate in camp activities with their campers

Assist with snacks or core mealtimes

Specialist camp counsellors with specific skill sets might be put in charge of a specific activity for the entire camp, and sometimes counsellors can be responsible for a group of campers for the entire program duration.

Camp counsellors are also expected to be patient, understanding, and able to think on their feet. Conflict resolution is another key skill; along with good teamwork and flexibility.

Pay, Benefits, and How to Qualify

As a summer camp counsellor, you’re guaranteed to earn $2000 minimum during your summer camp placement! You’re also provided with health insurance for the duration of your contract, accommodation and meals, and access to a 24/7 emergency hotline for support.

In order to qualify for our camp counselling program, applicants need to:

Be proficient in spoken English
Be free of criminal history and able to provide a background check
Be 18 or older by May 1st of your program year
Be available from early June to mid August
Be able to supervise and interact with campers

Applicants will also need a J-1 visa, which AmeriCamp will sponsor. Once your application is complete, you’ll be ready for your camp placement!

Your Summer Camp Counselling Placement

After you complete your application, AmeriCamp will distribute it to our affiliated summer camps across the United States. A specialist placement team and camp directors personally search through the applications in order to find the perfect fit for our camp counsellors.

It’s a good idea to remain open about what camp you’d like to be paired with, because once your camp placement is over, you’ll have 30 days in the US to travel wherever you like!
