Health History
Camp is a physically and emotionally demanding environment that requires certain health requirements to participate. In order to assess that you are physically and mentally fit to participate in the AmeriCamp program, we ask a brief set of health history questions in the Stage 1 application.
In the Personal Health History section of your application, you will be asked questions concerning:
- Pre-existing conditions or mental health conditions
- Prescription medications
- Allergies and dietary restrictions
- General lifestyle - drinking, smoking etc.
We have a Medical Follow Up process where we will contact all applicants with a pre-existing condition to assess whether they meet the prerequisites for participation on an individual basis. This may involve a short phone call where we ask additional questions concerning your condition and the severity of it.
In most cases, yes, however it depends on the severity of the condition. Camp is an incredibly physically and emotionally demanding environment where you will be outdoors, potentially working long days, taking part in physical activity, and dealing with hot or unpredictable weather. Due to this, for some people the Camp environment is not conducive with their medical condition and they struggle with heightened symptoms.
Using our expertise in Camp expectations and conditions and a history of data from previous AmeriCamp participants, we have generated a set of policies regarding physical fitness that must be met. We have a Medical Follow Up process where we will contact all applicants with a pre-existing condition to assess whether they meet these prerequisites on an individual basis. In most cases you will be accepted to the program, but if for any reason we deem your pre-existing condition too severe for participation in the program, you would receive a full refund of program fees.
