Why I Chose AmeriCamp
By Tegan Owen
Hi, I’m Tegan, a UK uni student who spent last summer as an Animal Care Specialist at Camps Equinunk & Blue Ridge in Pennsylvania which was all thanks to AmeriCamp. If you're thinking about spending your summer in the U.S., working with kids, gaining real career experience, and making memories that will last a lifetime, I hope this blog helps you take the leap.
Why I Chose AmeriCamp
I first discovered AmeriCamp through an advert while looking into summer camp opportunities. The idea of working with kids, building on my career path in animal care, and getting to travel the States all in one programme sounded perfect. AmeriCamp stood out immediately — clear information, transparent fees (starting at £399/£419), a full cost breakdown, and incredible support. From help with the application and visa process to regular check-ins, they made everything feel so straightforward and achievable. Even once I was placed, AmeriCamp continued to check in and offer support — something I really appreciated as a first-timer.
The Application Process
1. Initial Application & Video Interview
After completing the main application (which was super easy), I had a video interview with one of AmeriCamp’s amazing ambassadors. We chatted about my work experience, why I wanted to join the programme, and the next steps in the process. It felt more like a friendly conversation than a formal interview, which helped ease my nerves.
2. Optional Video Submission
AmeriCamp gives you the option to upload a short application video — and I highly recommend doing it. I recorded a quick video introducing myself, talking about my skills, and showing examples of me working with children. In the end, my camp director said they hired me largely because of the video, which helped them get a feel for my personality before we even spoke. So don't skip it — it's your chance to stand out!
3. Placement
Placement times vary for everyone, but I was lucky to be hired in November 2023 by Camps Equinunk & Blue Ridge. Getting that offer email from AmeriCamp (and directly from the camp) was such an exciting moment — it all felt real from that point on.
My Advice for Future AmeriCampers
● Start early: The earlier you apply, the more choice you'll have with placements.
● Make the most of your video: Show your personality! It really can make all the difference.
● Don’t stress if things take time: Everyone’s timeline is different — trust the process.
● Ask questions: AmeriCamp are there to help, and there are no silly questions.
● Be open-minded: Even if your placement isn’t what you expected, it could be even better than you imagined.
Final Thoughts
AmeriCamp helped me combine my passion for animal care with the adventure of summer camp in the U.S. I made incredible friends, gained real experience in my field, and travelled across America, all in one summer. If you're thinking about it, go for it. It might just be one of the best decisions you ever make.
