Your AmeriCamp Video

The AmeriCamp application process includes an introduction video. Our summer camps want to see your personality and enthusiasm and why you want to do AmeriCamp, which is sometimes difficult to see just on a written application. We want to hear about why you want to work with kids and what experiences and skills you will be bringing to camp.

Okay so some of you might think it’s a bit cringe worthy, but for a summer of lifetime it’s worthwhile and camp directors will always watch a video first so don’t be left behind!

Watch the video below first and then read through the information below!

WHAT TO INCLUDE AND NOT INCLUDE IN YOUR VIDEO:

  • Only 1-2 minutes in length. This is a quick snapshot of you!
  • This video is the first impression a Camp Director (your future employer!) will have of you. Be happy, confident and enthusiastic! Smile!
  • Film it in landscape/horizontal mode
  • Be as creative or as general as you like. You must talk about:
  • Why you are doing the AmeriCamp program and wanting to work at a Summer camp in America with AmeriCamp. Stay away from general terms such as ‘a camp in America’.
  • Your Experience with children/why you want to work with children at a USA Summer camp
  • What will make you a great counsellor
  • Your hobbies and interests in your home country (referring to the skills you wrote about on your application)
  • Why a camp should hire you!
  • Do not say Camp America in your video it will be rejected.
  • Make sure you put it on YouTube and save it as AmeriCamp 2018.

How to make your AmeriCamp video

ADDITIONS:

  • Video footage of you doing or teaching the skills you included in your application
  • Only a few photos of family and friends – camp is hiring you (not them). This is a job application video for working with children, so make sure your photos are appropriate (your drinking & partying photos etc are not allowed).
  • Music? Optional but if you do include it, make sure it is an appropriate song and lyrics (even if you only use part of the song) and check the volume. (We want to be able to hear you!)
  • If you are using photos or clips – you still need to talk and a camp needs to see at least 20-30 seconds of you in front on to the camera.

REMEMBER:

  • It’s okay for you to just do a general introduction clip.
  • It does not have to be a Hollywood epic.
  • Write out a script and then memorise it DO NOT video you reading off the script.
  • A camp director wants to see the real you so this is your chance to show why they should hire you no special effects required!

WHAT NOT TO DO!

  • If you’re a school leaver, perhaps not yet 18, there is no need to say this in your video. The fact is, when a camp director sees your application you have finished school, and by the time camp rolls around, you are over 6 months out of school. You are applying as an adult, there really is no need to mention your age as your date of birth is in your application.
  • Avoid using the selfie method of filming. It makes your video really shaky and off putting and you are not really able to look front on to the camera. This also limits your ability for movement particularly if you wish to demonstrate your skills.
  • Avoid filming in a location that is noisy and messy! Check what is behind you and around you. If you are in a room make sure it doesn’t look like a tornado just went through your room before  you did the video!
  • Avoid filming in the corner of the house, with dim lighting as though you are hiding out. Find a place that has some natural light, or doesn’t create a big shadow on your face and once again,  just speak with confidence.
  • Don’t say things like “I am doing this so I can see the world” or “I hope to become more independent and responsible by working at camp”. Camps want to know you are doing this for the job and children and you are applying as an adult so you should already have these qualities.
  • Keep your video more to like an advert advertising your skills and personality and what you promise to bring to camp

HOW TO FILM YOUR AMERICAMP VIDEO:

  • You can use a webcam, video camera or your phone to record your video.
  • If you are using an iPhone to record, the videos upload sideways.
  • Make sure you always film with the phone horizontal and the camera in the top corner.
  • It is much easier if you ask someone to help you film the video. A family member, friend or even a co-worker.
  • Remember you can always place the camera on a stable flat surface such as a shelf or desk if you have to.
  • If you are using a PC, you can edit on Windows Movie Maker. If using a Mac you can edit with iMovie. This allows you to cut out mistakes. It also allows you to record a couple of lines at a time and even change locations!
